Wood Restaurant Chairs: A Commercial Buyer’s Guide

Wood chairs are what most operators reach for when a dining room needs to feel warm rather than utilitarian. Designform Furnishings builds commercial wood chairs on solid hardwood frames — not veneered particle board — for restaurants, hotels, country clubs, steakhouses and senior living communities. Every frame is tested to hold up to 400 lbs and carries a 3-year frame warranty.

Which hardwood to specify

• European beech — the workhorse of contract seating. Dense, straight-grained, takes stain evenly, and strong enough for high-turn dining rooms. Most of our wood frames are beech.
• White oak and rustic oak — open grain and a visible texture that suits farmhouse, coastal and craft-brewery rooms.
• Ash — pale, resilient and excellent for light and Scandinavian-leaning interiors; also takes an ebony stain well.
• American black walnut — the premium option, specified for steakhouses, private dining rooms and club lounges.
• Teak — the only wood we recommend for genuinely outdoor use.

Joinery is what separates contract from residential

A residential wood chair fails in a restaurant within a year, usually at the seat-to-leg joint. Commercial wood frames use mortise-and-tenon or doweled joints with corner blocks and glued, screwed reinforcement, so the chair survives being dragged, stacked on tables at close and leaned back on nightly. Ask about joint construction before you compare prices — it is the difference that never shows in a photo.

Seat options

The same wood frame is usually available with several seats, and the seat drives both cost and comfort:

• Solid or veneer wood seat — easiest to clean, lowest cost, best for fast casual and cafe turns.
• Upholstered seat pad — the common choice for full-service dining; specify 75,000–100,000 double rub fabric or commercial vinyl meeting CAL TB 117-2013.
• Fully upholstered seat and back — for hotel restaurants, private dining and club rooms where guests linger.
• Woven cord, rush or leather strapping — texture without the maintenance of fabric; see our Alfresco Collection.

Finishes

Wood stains are matched by hand and sealed with a commercial-grade catalyzed lacquer that resists spills, sanitizer and heat. We can match an existing chair, a wood sample or a table top. Request finish samples through your rep before you commit to a full order — screen color is never reliable for wood.

Dimensions to check

Standard dining seat height is 18", and most dining tables sit at 29–30" high. Allow 24" of table edge per guest, and 18" between the seat and the table apron so guests can cross their legs. Arm chairs need the arm height checked against the apron — if the arms will not slide under, the chairs eat floor space.

Matching pieces

Most wood chair styles here have matching wood bar stools and counter stools, so a dining room and bar can read as one program. Pair with solid wood or butcher block table tops and cast iron table bases. For fully padded frames see upholstered chairs.

Standard production runs 14–20 weeks with 8–10 week rush available on many frames. Quick ship in-stock items leave in 2–3 business days. Minimum order is 4 pieces. Ganging hardware is available as a custom option; we do not stock stacking carts, but they can be custom made on request.
