How many bar stools fit along a bar is simple arithmetic once you know the spacing. The number that matters is the distance from the center of one stool to the center of the next, and for most commercial bars that is about 24 inches. This chart does the math for common bar and counter lengths.

The rule: about 24" per stool, center to center

Allow roughly 24" of bar or counter run for each seat. That gives a guest room for elbows and a place setting, and gives staff room to serve between stools. Divide the usable bar length in inches by 24 and round down. Step up to 26" to 30" for wider stools, stools with arms, and swivel stools, which need room to turn.

Counts are rounded down and assume a straight, unobstructed run. Measure only the usable length: subtract service stations, pass-throughs, wall returns and posts before you divide.

Corners, ends and L-shaped bars

  • Inside corners: two stools meeting at an inside corner will collide. Skip the corner seat, or leave extra run on each side of it.
  • Ends of the bar: leave a little extra room at the ends so the last guest is not pinned against a wall or a service well.
  • L- and U-shaped bars: measure each straight run separately, subtract the corners, then add the runs together.

Check the seat height too

Spacing only works if the stools are the right height for the surface. Bar height tops (about 40–42") take stools with a 29–31" seat, and counter height tops (about 36") take a 24–26" seat. Most stools in our range are bar height, with a median seat height of 30"; many are also offered in counter height. See our bar vs. counter stool height guide and browse counter stools.

Stool width

Across the bar stools in our catalog that list dimensions, the typical stool is about 18" wide, and most fall between 16.5" and 22". A stool near the top of that range, or one with arms, is the reason to plan at 26" to 30" rather than 24". Every product page lists width, depth and seat height.
