Metal bar stools take more abuse than any other seat in a restaurant. They get dragged sideways, stood on, kicked at the footrest and wiped down with sanitizer every night. Designform Furnishings builds commercial metal stools on welded steel and aluminum frames for bars, breweries, hotel lobbies, casinos and food halls, each tested to hold up to 400 lbs with a 3-year frame warranty.
Heights, and how to get them right
- Bar height — 29–30" seat height, for a 42" bar top.
- Counter height — 24–26" seat height, for a 36" counter or island.
- Dining or low stool — 18" seat height, used at standard 30" tables and communal benches.
- ADA — plan on a section of counter at 34" maximum with knee clearance; we can supply ADA-height stools to sit with it.
Measure from the finished floor to the underside of the bar, not the top, and leave 10–12" between the seat and the underside. Allow 24" of bar run per stool so guests are not shoulder to shoulder.
Steel or aluminum
Steel is heavier, stiffer and the right call for indoor bars where stools get leaned on hard. Aluminum is roughly half the weight, will not rust, and is what we specify for pool decks, rooftop bars and coastal patios. Both take powder coat; aluminum gets an e-coat primer for outdoor exposure.
Backless, low back or full back
Backless stools tuck fully under the bar, keep sightlines open and let you fit more seats along a run — the standard for high-volume bars. Low-back stools add support without blocking the room. Full-back and swivel stools are for hotel lobby bars, casinos and restaurants where guests sit for a full meal; a swivel adds comfort but also adds moving parts to maintain.
Footrests wear first
The footrest ring is the part that fails. Look for a welded steel ring rather than a bolted one, and specify a brushed stainless or brass footrest cover on wood-frame stools — it is a replaceable wear part that keeps the stool looking new for years. On metal frames, a heavier gauge ring in the same powder coat is standard.
Seats and upholstery
Wood and metal seats clean fastest. Upholstered seats are more comfortable but need commercial-grade material: 75,000–100,000 double rubs, CAL TB 117-2013, and vinyl rather than fabric anywhere near a service bar. We accept COM and COL; minimums may apply.

Standard production is 14–20 weeks, with 8–10 week rush available on most frames. Quick ship in-stock stools leave in 2–3 business days. Minimum order is 4 pieces. Ganging hardware is available as a custom option; we do not stock stacking carts, but they can be custom made on request.
