Smith Backless Stool

The Smith Backless Stool is a simple, well-proportioned stool with a square upholstered seat set on a solid wood frame. Four tapered legs splay gently outward for stability, and a metal footring ties them together at a comfortable height. The seat cushion is generously padded, with a tailored, tufted look in the version shown.

Without a back, the Smith tucks fully under a bar or counter overhang, which keeps aisles clear and makes it ideal for tight bars, kitchen-style counters and communal high tops. It is part of the Smith family, so it pairs easily with the Smith Stool with Upholstered Seat and Smith dining chairs for a consistent look across a space.

Built for commercial use

The Smith Backless Stool is built with mortise-and-tenon joinery and very few bolted connections, the way almost all of our wood seating is made. It is tested to 400 lbs and tested internally to meet ANSI/BIFMA standards, and its foam and upholstery meet CAL TB 117-2013. It ships fully assembled from the factory and carries a 3-year frame structural warranty and a 1-year finish and upholstery warranty from shipment. Each stool comes standard with heavy-duty nail-on nylon glides, suitable for most commercial floor types, including hardwood, tile, stone, concrete and carpet. It also comes standard with a stainless steel foot rest cover, available as an option in brushed brass or black brass.

Finishes and upholstery

Wood (Wood Option B): American walnut, American white oak, North American ash, European beech, black painted ash (open pore), beechwood with walnut stain, and ashwood with light or dark walnut stain.

Leather (Leather Option A): a wide range of standard, deluxe and premium leathers, including distressed premium hides in rich browns, greens and reds.

Faux leather (Faux Leather Option B): standard and deluxe faux leathers in a broad palette of neutrals, browns, blues and greens.

Fabric (Fabric Option A): a wide selection of commercial fabrics, including tweeds and performance textiles in many colors. COM is also accepted (minimums may apply).

For customer-supplied material, we recommend specifying a commercial-grade textile rated at 75,000–100,000 double rubs. We accept COM and COL and will give you the exact yardage. See our upholstery double rubs guide for more.

Lead times and ordering

Standard production is 14–20 weeks, and most orders can be rushed to 8–10 weeks. Minimum order is typically 4 pieces, and smaller orders are considered on request. Sample stools are available for sit tests through our sample loan program.
